Introduction
While Vietnam has made notable progress in economic development and poverty reduction, persistent challenges such as social inequality, rapid urbanization, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and climate change continue to pose significant barriers. These issues exacerbate disparities across multiple sectors, deeply affecting the lives of millions—especially vulnerable children. Those from low-income families, marginalized communities, or vulnerable living conditions face a heightened risk of being trapped in the cycle of intergenerational poverty.
In this context, ASIF Foundation believes that one of the most sustainable skills solutions to break this cycle is life education. It serves as a powerful tool to empower vulnerable children, equipping them to overcome adversity and thrive intellectually, emotionally, and socially.
1. Poverty is more than just a lack of material resources
According to UNICEF, poverty is not merely a matter of financial scarcity. It is a complex web of socio-economic barriers that limit access to education, healthcare, and development opportunities. For vulnerable children, the daily struggle to meet basic needs such as food, shelter, and safety often overshadows their ability to develop essential life skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and emotional resilience.
Numerous international studies have shown that children from disadvantaged backgrounds rarely have the opportunity to cultivate these skills, leading to consequences that extend far beyond childhood. Without timely intervention, these challenges are often passed down from one generation to the next, reinforcing multidimensional and intergenerational poverty.
This is why life skills education is not simply an option—it is a necessity. It provides children with the inner strength they need to break free from the cycle of poverty that entraps their families and communities.

2. The importance of life skills education
Life skills problems encompass a broad range of cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioral competencies—including critical thinking, problem-solving, effective communication, self-awareness, emotional regulation, and teamwork. Far from being supplemented, these skills are fundamental to a comprehensive education.
Unlike academic or technical skills, life skills enable children to navigate their environments, cope with stress, build self-confidence, and persevere in the pursuit of their goals. For vulnerable children, life skills provide the necessary tools to rise above their circumstances and unlock long-term, positive transformation.
Enabling, life skills education helps:
Enhance academic performance and encourage school retention;
Improve mental health, build self-confidence, and foster positive relationships.
Strengthen the ability to cope with adversity through problem-solving, emotional resilience, and stress management.
When a vulnerable child is empowered, they not only transform their own life but also become a source of inspiration for their peers and community, spreading a spirit of resilience and hope.
3. Life skills education – A long-term investment in inner strength
At ASIF Foundation, we regard life skills education as a cornerstone strategy for nurturing the inner strength of vulnerable children. This is not a one-off activity but a sustained, long-term process that grows alongside the child.
Through our journey initiatives—including the Companion Scholarship Program, youth leadership development, and personal growth projects—we integrate life skills education into every step of the child's development. Our goal is not only to support children in staying in school, but also to equip them with the capacity to shape their future and contribute meaningfully to society.
It is time to recognize that life skills are not a luxury. They are a fundamental right that every child—regardless of who they are or where they come from—deserves access to.
