Amid the laughter of nearly 100 children attending the Nurturing the Future Summer Camp, part of the Empoweing You project, T. looked just like any other child. He smiled brightly for photos with his friends, listened attentively during a personal safety workshop, and excitedly talked about his plans for the new school year.
If you had met T. that day, it would have been hard to imagine that, not long ago, whether he would be able to stay in school was still uncertain.
T. lives with his family in a rented room of just nine square metres in an ageing apartment block. Within less than a year, his father suffered two strokes in succession. Shortly after returning home from a lengthy hospital stay, his mother was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and now requires dialysis three times a week. Overnight, T.'s older brother became the family's primary breadwinner, balancing work while caring for both parents and making sure T. and his younger brother could get to school. On some days, however, even attending class became impossible simply because there was no one available to take them there.
Yet what stays with us most is not the hardship T. has endured, but his determination to keep learning. Small for his age due to malnutrition and often carrying the burden of unpaid school fees as his family struggled financially, T. continued to work hard and maintained good academic performance. For him, school is more than a place to study. It is where he believes his future can still be different.
T.'s story is not unique.
Every child in the Empoweing You project carries a different story. Some face the risk of dropping out because their families can no longer afford school fees. Others have attended school for years without a birth certificate or proper legal identification, leaving their right to education constantly at risk. Some grow up in households affected by illness, unemployment, or unexpected crises that make staying in school an ongoing struggle. Others quietly withdraw into themselves, having never believed they deserved to be heard or given an opportunity.
That is why Empoweing You was never designed as simply a scholarship programme.
Instead, the project is built around a Case Management approach, recognising that every child requires a different kind of support. Behind every scholarship is a network of care: home visits to better understand each family's circumstances, conversations with parents to identify practical solutions, tutoring to help children keep up with their studies, life skills training to build confidence, and legal support to help families secure the documents children need to continue their education.
Rather than distributing resources equally, the project directs support where it is needed most. Sometimes, what keeps a child in school is not financial assistancebut a birth certificate. Sometimes it is counselling that helps them navigate family trauma. And sometimes, it is simply having someone patient enough to listen, to walk alongside them, and to remind them that they are not facing life's challenges alone.
Over the past year, those small, consistent acts of support have led to meaningful change. Some children have become more confident after participating in life skills sessions. Others have improved their academic performance through additional tutoring. Some families have successfully completed legal procedures, ensuring their children can continue their education without interruption. And children like T. have remained in school despite facing illness and crisis at home.
These changes cannot always be captured by numbers alone. They are reflected in the confidence of a child speaking in front of a group for the first time, in the relieved smile of a parent who no longer fears their child will have to leave school, or in the excitement of children talking about their favourite subjects instead of the hardships waiting for them at home.
Perhaps that is why the end-of-year summer camp is more than a celebration of another completed school year. It is a moment to reflect on how far each child has come and to honour the resilience they have shown along the way. Amid the laughter, the games, and the heartfelt hugs shared with teachers and social workers, we were reminded of the true meaning of "walking with" a child. It is not about solving every problem for them, but about staying beside them long enough for them to discover the strength to move forward on their own.
One school year has come to an end. In September, a new chapter will begin, bringing fresh lessons, new challenges, and dreams that continue to grow.
